The Tax Amazon fight begins…..now!
I am tremendously excited to announce a big start for our movement in January!
On Monday, January 13, we’ll have the swearing-in ceremony to my third term as a socialist City Councilmember. I’m honored that I’ll be sworn in by the dynamic and fearless Sara Nelson, president of the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA (AFA). And right after the swearing in, we will launch our 2020 Tax Amazon campaign!
All wrapped into one huge launch of our movement in 2020. And we need you there.
We just made history in beating Amazon and the Chamber of Commerce by winning my re-election to City Council as a member of Socialist Alternative. Seattle’s voters have shown that they overwhelmingly support taxing large corporations to fund housing and vital services. With this historic mandate, it’s our movement’s responsibility to strike while the iron is hot.
That’s why we are launching our movement’s campaign on January 13 to tax Amazon and other big corporations to build social housing — high-quality, permanently-affordable, public-owned housing — for working people. We need an alternative to the failed for-profit market, and a major expansion of social housing can create thousands of well-paying union jobs.
I’m especially excited to be sworn into office by Sara Nelson, a fighter and hero of the labor movement, who captured the attention of working people globally earlier this year, when she courageously called for a general strike against Trump’s government shutdown, and led the way in defeating it. My union sister Sara brings the fighting labor spirit and the confidence in our working class that will be crucial to us as we take on Amazon and their corporate and political allies in the coming year.
I really hope you will join us at Washington Hall on January 13.
In solidarity,
Kshama Sawant
